Is it cool to ask for fanfic recs on one's journal? I assume so.  I guess it really doesn't matter, because I can just post it and if everyone thinks it's terribly rude/lazy of me they just won't respond!

Since I'm rather relatively new to seriously really reading fanfic, there's a lot of good stuff in my fandoms I know I've missed. I just don't know where it is. I've read outrageous amounts of Sherlock fic (if you want Sherlock/John recs, I can give you tons!), but I just haven't been able to find too much awesome stuff in other fandoms. I've done some searching for a few fandoms I loved and found some good fics, but I still want more.

So if anyone could either rec fics or point me to communities that have lots of recs for the things I like, that would be amazing.

I really tend to prefer canon based fics, or fics that are close to canon, fill in gaps, expand on things that were hinted, character studies, etc . Not really a fan of AU's or crossovers in general, but I have read a few that were wonderful, so I'm open to them. (But feel free to rec non canon pairings that you think are well done, I'm honestly open to anything that is written well.)
I also quite enjoy gen/non shippery fanfics, or ones that are just focused on one character or something like that. And the longer the fic, the better.

You should check out the het_reccers comm. Recs for het ships only, but they have an amazing number of recs for just about any fandom you can imagine. (They don't bash slash either, it's just not a slash community.)

For Doctor Who, I recommend checking out dw_ficsearch which is a comm for requesting recs. You don't need to have anything to request or rec, you can just scroll through everyone elses. Of course if you throw that first sentence at them, they'd probably be happy to help.

I won't rec anything specific as just about everything I have is Rose-centric (shippy and gen).

rec50 is a comm good for general recs.

And this comm (http://ficrecs-ftw.livejournal.com/profile) has a list of affliates that include other rec comms.
