tv meme day 17. yes you read that right.

I am so bored tonight that I am actually doing another day in the tv meme! Yes, I know this should have been finished weeks ago. But well, I am a slacker and I roll at my own pace. Which is apparently very, very slow.

Day 17 - Favorite mini series

The best answer I have for this one is Dune and Children of Dune (which were aired on the scifi channel a few years ago). I first saw the original Dune movie a long time ago, and I was pretty much just overall confused by 75% of it. Eventually I read the books (though I haven't actually finished all of them yet) and I fell in love. I remember lots of geeky excitement when both miniseries finally came out. They weren't perfect, there are numerable flaws, but I still enjoyed them because they brought Dune to life. I'm not really sure why I like Dune so much, but I do. Hell the first part of my username (ghanima) is from Dune. The only good vid I could find for this one is here, which is from Children of Dune (which is about the 2nd and 3rd books in the Dune series).
I did also like scifi channel's Alice, but it was just sort of a fun miniseries (that featured Andrew Lee Potts ♥) and not something I was ever super obsessed with.

I loved Scifi's Dune & Children of Dune and yeah, it wasn't perfect or anything but it was still very good. I also really liked Taken and of course enjoyed Alice muchly as well. Good stuff.

Ugh, I love Dune. And I was really pleased with the SciFi minis - I was disappointed that they didn't keep making them. My favorite two books in the series are actually the last two - Heretics and Chapterhouse - so if you've never read that far you definitely should.

I love Dune too (haven't read all books yet, tho) and the scifi produccion is one my fav. miniseries as well. Just like you say, not perfect, but it looked really good, the characters were right on spot, and the story was very well told, imo. :)

And very cool vid, btw, I enjoyed watching it. Thanks for the link :)

The Dune novels by Frank Herbert are great and actually get better as the series progresses. Chapterhouse is especially good. I definitely recommend reading them all. However Brian Herbert has bastardized his father's legacy with the crap he's spit out the last several years. Please don't waste your time with any of his drivel.

I like both the original Dune movie and miniseries. I don't find one version better than the other as I can pick characters from both to make up what they should be from the books. For instance I think Paul, Jessica and Leto are more accurate from the original movie and I'd mix them with Chani, Stilgar, and Irulan the miniseries, etc. The original Dune novels are to scifi what LOTR is to fantasy. Unfortunately, Dune is a very difficult story to visually explain. I just hope any future Dune movies aren't worse that what's already been done.

Yeah I actually bought the first three "prequel" House Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino novels. After the third book I just couldn't take it any more. I'm ashamed I have them. Those books sit in the far back corner of my bookshelf while the Dune Chronicles are proudly on display. Anyway not only do Brian and Kevin disregard established history from the original novels (they change quite a lot of stuff), they're writing style was pretty crappy. So yeah, the reviews on Amazon are pretty accurate. I purchased the books when the were first published about 8 or years ago.
